On the 11th of December last year, The Flexible Working (Amendment) Regulations Bill was laid before Parliament. The bill was passed into law on the 6th of April 2024 and now applies to all applications for flexible working made after this date.
The term 'flexible working' can apply to both working hours and locations. Under the new regulations, workers are eligible to make requests to work flexibly from the first day of their employment; previously, a worker would have to have been employed for a minimum of 26 weeks before making such a request. The act also requires that employers consult with workers who make a flexible-working request before rejecting it.
The new law allows employees to make two flexible-working requests per year as opposed to the single request they were previously permitted. Employers now have just two months to respond to requests compared to the previous time-limit of three months. Employees now do not have to explain how their flexible-working request may effect the employer or how such effects might be dealt with.
A recent in-depth study by Slack sought the opinions of 1,000 desk workers in the UK. The results of the survey revealed that over half of respondents (55%) planned to make a request to work flexibly under the new regulations.
